As a part of the larger Japan Blue Group, which includes fabric mill Collect Mills, the brand offers a rare level of vertical integration, controlling everything from cotton selection and dyeing to weaving and construction. Unlike most labels that begin with a design concept and source fabric later, Japan Blue Jeans was created specifically to showcase the quality of the fabrics themselves. Japan Blue Jeans began as an in-house project within Japan Blue Co. to demonstrate the potential of the company’s denim. Starting with just two fits and a single 14.8 oz. U.S. cotton selvedge fabric, founder Hiroki Kishimoto sought to create a line of jeans that emphasised fabric quality over branding.Since then, the brand has grown steadily. It now offers over 50 styles, ranging from core denim fits to heritage-inspired garments and outerwear all produced locally in Kojima, Japan’s long-standing denim manufacturing hub.
Japan Blue’s design philosophy is guided by a simple idea: let the fabric take centre stage. By removing unnecessary embellishment, the brand encourages wearers to focus on the texture, aging, and feel of the denim. This approach is most clearly reflected in their commitment to creating the ideal five-pocket jean which is a utilitarian staple made exceptional through attention to fabric and fit. Fades and wear patterns are considered part of the experience, emphasising how jeans evolve over time with their owner.
All Japan Blue Jeans are made from authentic Japanese selvedge denim, woven primarily on vintage shuttle looms. The brand draws from a wide range of denim weights, weaves, and cotton blends to produce fabrics that balance durability with comfort. Having direct access to Collect Mills gives the brand a unique edge: they can develop proprietary fabrics from the yarn up, experiment with dyeing techniques, and make iterative improvements from season to season. Rope dyeing, slub textures, and variations in tension and indigo saturation are common elements that define the brand’s textiles.
All Japan Blue Jeans are cut, sewn, and finished in Kojima, ensuring consistency and traceability at every step. The region is known for its network of small, specialised workshops that excel in traditional techniques like chainstitching, bartack reinforcement, and manual washing processes. By producing locally, Japan Blue supports the local economy and ensures that the skills of Kojima’s artisans remain at the heart of the brand.
