To coincide with the pre-release of the 26FW Collection, we take a closer look at leather and the craft behind the incomparable Double Helix.
Leather existed long before clothing became expressive. Archaeological evidence shows animal hides being used tens of thousands of years ago for shelter, carrying tools and especially footwear. Early shoes were not designed for comfort or style; they were a response to terrain, cold and distance. Leather proved uniquely suited to these demands because it could flex without tearing, insulate without trapping moisture and survive repeated use in harsh conditions. These same qualities of durability, adaptability, and resilience are what allowed leather to remain relevant as societies advanced. While textiles evolved rapidly, leather changed slowly, refined through experience rather than replacement.

Why Horsehide Is Different?
Among the many types of leather used throughout history, horsehide has always occupied a particular position. Horses mature more slowly than cattle and their skin develops under constant movement and muscle tension. This results in a dense, tightly packed fibre structure that gives horsehide its distinctive weight and strength. Compared to cowhide, horsehide feels firmer at first wear and takes longer to break in but it holds its shape and integrity far longer.
This density also makes horsehide less forgiving in production. Any inconsistency in tanning, cutting or finishing becomes immediately visible. When handled correctly however, horsehide rewards patience with a surface that develops depth, grain and character.
What is Vegetable Tanning?
Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest methods of preserving animal hide and one of the most demanding. Instead of relying on modern chemical accelerants, vegetable tanning uses tannins extracted from bark, roots and wood. Hides are immersed in progressively stronger tanning baths over an extended period, often several months, allowing the fibres to slowly absorb the tannins and transform. During this process, the hide naturally shrinks and tightens as moisture is replaced by tannins.
This shrinkage, sometimes as much as 30 percent, compresses the fibre structure and contributes to the leather’s strength and stability. It is a process defined by loss, time, restraint and it is one reason vegetable-tanned leather remains a premium material.
Japanese Precision in Tanning
In Japan, vegetable tanning was never treated as outdated, it was treated as a discipline.
Japanese tanneries refined traditional methods by applying strict control over variables such as temperature, agitation and curing time. Hides are often rested and stored for extended periods after tanning, allowing the leather to stabilise and develop internal consistency before finishing begins.
This emphasis on patience and precision produces leather with balanced firmness, controlled grain and a tactile quality that feels intentional rather than incidental. The goal is not to eliminate variation entirely but to ensure that every hide meets a predictable standard of performance.



Double Helix and Material Selection
Double Helix approaches horsehide as a material that demands selection, not compromise. Only raw hides from large Polish horses are used, chosen for their thickness, fibre density and growth quality. Each hide falls within a narrow range of 1.3mm to 1.5mm, a specification that balances structural integrity with long-term wearability in jacket form.
Through repeated testing and refinement, Double Helix improves upon traditional Japanese vegetable tanning techniques. Tanning duration, surface gloss, colour saturation and hand feel are adjusted through controlled experimentation, allowing for high-precision production management without sacrificing the natural character of the leather.

The objective is consistency across key qualities: lustre, texture, three-dimensionality, colour depth, scent, weight, so that each finished jacket performs as expected over time.
Environmental Responsibility
Modern leather production carries environmental and health considerations that cannot be ignored.
Double Helix processes its horsehide using environmentally friendly solvents developed by Bayer in Germany. These solvents are designed to fully volatilise during production, leaving no chemical residue in the finished leather. The result is a hide that is stable, clean and safe for prolonged contact with the skin. While Japan already maintains strict environmental standards for leather manufacturing, Double Helix exceeds these requirements by meeting PFI benchmark testing, among the highest international standards for environmental safety and human health. This commitment ensures that longevity does not come at the expense of responsibility.
A Material Built for Time
Leather’s value has always been tied to its relationship with time.
Horsehide does not reveal itself immediately. It resists, adapts and gradually conforms to the wearer through repeated use. Creases form slowly, grain becomes more pronounced and the surface develops a depth that cannot be replicated through artificial finishing.
Double Helix works within this understanding, producing horsehide jackets designed not to look finished on day one, but to evolve. These are garments intended for long-term ownership, pieces that reward patience and become more personal with every year of wear.
The Flight Jacket
By the late nineteenth century, leather had already proven itself on the ground.
Industrialisation brought new machines, new speeds and new dangers. Rail workers, mechanics, miners and motorcyclists relied on leather not for appearance but for protection. Heavy hides shielded bodies from wind, oil, heat and abrasion. Jackets emerged not as fashion items but as functional layers, cut to block air, reinforced at stress points and built to survive constant use.
As machines grew faster, the role of leather expanded with them.
Early aviation offered no insulation, no pressurisation and no protection from the elements. Pilots flew in open cockpits, exposed to freezing temperatures, violent wind and constant vibration. At altitude, the cold could be severe enough to numb limbs and cloud judgment.
Leather was already familiar to pilots. It had proven its ability to resist wind, shed water and retain warmth without restricting movement. Heavy horsehide jackets, lined with wool or shearling became standard equipment.
The earliest flying jackets were practical to the point of severity. High collars closed tightly at the neck. Cuffs were adjustable to seal out air. Front closures were designed to be operated with gloved hands. Every detail existed to solve a problem.

Horsehide in Military Service
As aviation moved from experimentation into warfare, demand for reliable materials increased rapidly.
Horsehide became a preferred leather for flight jackets due to its density and resistance to tearing under stress. Unlike lighter leathers, it could withstand prolonged exposure to wind at speed while maintaining structural integrity. Its weight was not a disadvantage, it was reassurance.
By the outbreak of World War II, leather jacket production scaled to unprecedented levels. The United States alone produced hundreds of thousands of flight jackets for Army Air Forces pilots and crews. Patterns were standardised, specifications tightened and materials carefully regulated.
Despite the scale, the expectations remained high. A failed jacket at altitude could be fatal. Leather had to perform consistently, regardless of conditions
War and Standardisation
World War II forced design discipline.
Jackets such as flight and bomber styles were stripped of excess and refined into clear, functional forms. Silhouettes became shorter for ease of movement in confined cockpits. Waistbands and cuffs were knitted to trap heat. Pockets were positioned for accessibility rather than symmetry.
Leather jackets were issued as equipment, not personal expression. They were meant to be worn daily, often for years, under extreme conditions. Repairs were common. Wear was expected.
The sheer number of jackets produced during the war permanently shifted leather from specialist material to cultural symbol. When servicemen returned home, they brought their jackets with them – creased, scarred and personal.
From Uniform to Identity
After the war, leather jackets moved into civilian life carrying a new weight.
They were no longer just protective garments. They became markers of experience, independence and authority. Motorcyclists adopted them for the same reasons pilots had: wind resistance, durability and protection. Workers wore them because they lasted longer than anything else available.
What made these jackets compelling was not polish but honesty. The leather told a story, where it had been, how it had been used. Horsehide, in particular retained this narrative quality more than any other material.
As aviation technology advanced, cockpits became enclosed and insulated. Leather was no longer required for survival at altitude. Synthetic materials offered lighter weight and lower cost.
Yet leather jackets remained.
