Japan Blue Jeans: Indigo Dyed Sashiko

Sashiko is a unique Japanese handicraft technique that has been passed down through generations.

The term “sashiko” (刺し子) literally translates to “little stabs” or “small stitches,” referring to the hand-sewing technique that involves creating a simple, running stitch. It originated during the Edo period and was originally used to reinforce and insulate clothing, particularly for firefighters. This technique involved layering fabrics and stitching them together, not only to repair worn out garments but also to add durability. Over time, sashiko evolved from a purely utilitarian fabric to a cultural symbol, admired for its durability, and the beauty of its geometric patterns. Now, Japan Blue Jeans brings a modern interpretation of this timeless fabric with their 11oz indigo sashiko offerings, the Sashimi Chore Coat and Sashimi Wide Tapered Pants.

Sashiko’s Roots

Traditionally, sashiko fabric was woven using a cotton thread in an alternating pattern, creating a thick, durable, and sturdy material. The distinctive texture of sashiko made it popular for laborers and first responders, with its reinforcement properties making it ideal for uniforms, especially for Kendo and Judo practitioners. Over time, sashiko became associated with a more decorative function while still retaining its practical qualities.

For decades, the fabric was recognised for its strength and stiffness, qualities that made it a symbol of endurance. However, Japan Blue Jeans has developed an innovative version of sashiko that combines the history and practicality of the material with the soft, breathable feel required for everyday wear. By using rope-dyed indigo yarns, Japan Blue’s sashiko fabric offers a fade potential similar to denim. The outer layer of indigo fades first, revealing the lighter core of the yarns beneath. This creates a beautiful aging process that makes the fabric more distinctive the more it’s worn. Areas with more friction, such as the waist and pockets, will naturally show more wear and fade, giving the fabric an even more textured appearance as time goes on.

The Sashimi Chore Coat and Sashimi Wide Tapered Pants highlight this evolution. These pieces are designed with the functionality of classic workwear, but with a contemporary twist that makes them perfect for everyday wear.
