Founded in 2010 by Japanese artist Muu, Munqa is built around what he calls “NEWTIVE”, a combination of New and Native.
Drawing on cultural influences from Muu’s youth and Folk Art, Munqa reinterprets traditional motifs to create a contemporary expression of Native-inspired design. Each piece of Munqa jewellery is a reflection of this philosophy, blending heritage with modern artistry.

Munqa jewelry is handcrafted from .925 sterling silver, following techniques inspired by vintage Native American methods. Unlike most modern silver jewellery, which is produced by casting, every Munqa piece is made entirely by hand. The process begins with melting silver into boards. This foundational step gives the surface a natural texture and subtle irregularities, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.

Next, the silver boards are carefully cut into the basic shapes of rings, bracelets, pins, and brooches. Each cut is performed by hand, requiring precision and skill to maintain clean lines while preserving the character of the silver. Once the shapes are formed, the pieces undergo stamping and engraving. Traditional stamps imprint cultural motifs into the metal, while Suji-bori carving adds depth and fine details. Some designs are further enhanced with turquoise or coral inlays, adding color and accentuating the handcrafted aesthetic. Because every stamp, engraving, and inlay is applied manually, each piece carries unique variations, giving the jewellery its individuality.

After stamping, carving, and inlaying, the pieces are polished and finished by hand. Even the smallest finishing touches influence the way the silver catches the light, adding to the charm and personality of the design. This meticulous, hands-on process, executed by Japanese master craftsmen, ensures that each item is truly one of a kind.

Through Munqa, Muu brings a fresh perspective to Native-inspired jewellery. By combining traditional craftsmanship with cultural storytelling, Folk Art influences, and natural stone accents, Munqa creates pieces that are both timeless and contemporary.
