Neighbourhood Watch : Gavin Lau

As Gavin Lau opens the door to his Collingwood, Victorian terrace, the first thing we notice is the hand made sashiko design on his t-shirt.

“My Mum did this!” he tells us.

The t-shirt is a Godspeed Daimaru Loopwheel T-Shirt and Gavin’s mum who still lives in Malaysia has been trying her hand at the ancient Japanese art form. “She wasn’t confident enough to work straight on the shirt but I chose some patches she’d already completed and she sewed them on.”

Gavin moved to Melbourne 20 years ago to study, eventually becoming a pharmacist. His mother’s appreciation of craft and creativity has clearly worn off on her son. Living with his partner Louise and whippet, Chapo, Gavin is currently working on a renovation of his beautiful home.
Gavin’s love of craft is only surpassed by the value of utility.

Form always follows function. The stars of the kitchen are the freestanding cooker, Kees Van Der Westen Spiritello espresso machine and the very best cookware. They are there not for show but to engage with and Louise can attest to Gavin’s skills in the kitchen. Products that are built well, may often be more expensive but over time prove to be a smart investment. Gavin makes decisions with this in mind across all aspects of his life but particularly when it comes to clothing.

Introduced  to the world of Japanese Denim through visiting URAHARA more than 5 years ago, Gavin appreciates craftsmanship, durability and comfort. His go-to is an old pair of 21oz Iron Heart 634s and he enjoys the subtle differences in the denim as time goes by, particularly after a wash. He appreciates the stories and historical references of pieces without being too nerdy about it. His preferred straight fit has been the standard over time yet now he opts for a slightly higher rise. “Comfort comes first”. With Iron Heart featuring strongly, build and utility shine through Gavin’s URAHARA pieces. Selections like Zerrows, Rolling Dubs Trio and his latest addition, the Double Helix A2 leather jacket are complemented by his use of our Denim Darning service to prolong the life of his favourite jeans.

Gavin and Louise’s tips for where to head in the neighbourhood? Hinoki for sushi, Stefanino Panino e Vino, The Napier Hotel for a good Guinness and Aunty Peg’s for a coffee although that’s second only to Gav’s homemade cuppa. After the espressos he served us today we sincerely agree!
